Thursday 26 January 1.10pm ROSALIND VENTRIS (viola)
|
Successful Mid-day auditionee Rosalind Ventris pairs one of the great works for viola and piano, by Brahms, with a beautiful sonata from the distinguished English composer and viola player Rebecca Clarke ( 1886 – 1979). She achieved what she called "my one brief whiff of fame" in 1919 when her viola Sonata tied for first place in a competition sponsored by the American patron of music Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Striking for its passion and power, Clark's music spans a range of 20th-century styles from Impressionism, to post-Romantic, and neo-Classical. Although she wrote nearly 100 works, including songs, choral works, chamber pieces and music for solo piano, only 20 were published in her lifetime.
